Demystifying Hypnosis

Did you know that you’ve already been hypnotized literally thousands of times in your life? Surprised? In fact, when you daydream, space out at a boring meeting, find yourself entranced in front of the TV, or lose yourself in a good book, you are in the equivalent of a hypnotic state.

It is a natural state, one that you cycle in and out of several times a day, that is generally characterized by:

  • a pleasantly relaxed body

  • a slowing down of the thinking, rational conscious mind

  • an experience of inward focused concentration

  • a greater access to the subconscious or deeper mind through your imagination

  • a greater receptivity to suggestion

A common misconception about hypnotic states is that one is unconscious, vulnerable, even out of control, when in fact electroencephalogram readings show the brain to be in an alpha range (cycles/min) which is associated with a mind that is Relaxed, Focused, and Attentive.

Hypnosis techniques make use of our natural ability to connect with the Subconscious or Right brain—the oldest and largest (90%) part of our mind. It is this deeper level of the mind – like the hard drive of a computer – that holds the imprints and beliefs that drive our behavior and create our self image.

Most people consider the Left Brain, the thinking rational mind, as the source of change in their lives. Our Left Brain can certainly make decisions, balance our checkbook, set goals and even piece together our "story."

From a broader perspective, this may explain how we may understand our personal history, our “story” with our thinking mind and still revisit old issues, painful emotions and unhealthy responses to life despite all of our best therapeutic efforts. At a deeper level, your mind may still hold scenes and memories essentially frozen in time that continue to hold the OLD in place. As if a part of you still lives in your childhood home, or lingers in an old relationship, while the greater part of your consciousness exists in the here and now. It is these scenes of unfinished business that call to us for healing through physical symptoms, low self-esteem, anxiety, addictions, phobias and fear.

Hypnosis techniques allow you to safely access the Subconscious Mind and powerfully shift the way you think, feel and behave at the ground level of your mind. Since it bypasses the “doubting voice” of the Conscious Mind, it allows self-discovery, and healing to evolve in considerably less time than conventional “talk therapy”.

In learning to access the Subconscious you can:

  • Find and re-evaluate your inner programming

  • Release habitual patterns of behavior and thinking

  • Access the solutions/answers that lie within

  • Install new and healthy suggestions, beliefs and behaviors and thereby change your perception of yourself

  • Open to spiritual perspectives-the higher mind, a loving and supportive source of inner guidance

  • Open to new creative possibilities. Unleash your inner resources, dreams and the energy to manifest them.

  • Access deep levels of calm and relaxation at will. Be at peace within yourself and in all situations.

  • Free-up stuck or blocked energy flows in the body

  • Discover and understand the messages underlying our physical symptoms. Accelerate physical healing

As you cultivate a relationship with your Subconscious Mind, you are opening to your own unique and vast potential to create your life anew – to know your authentic self and direct your Subconscious Mind as an ally on your path of self-mastery. In the words of author, teacher and visionary, Jean Houston, “We all have the extraordinary coded inside us, waiting to be released.”
